An arrest has been following the stabbing death of a 35-year-old South Florida woman who was attacked while jogging in Washington D.C., police said.

Wendy Karina Martinez, from Lake Worth, was a passionate runner who had just gotten engaged last week, her family announced on social media.

“We are deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy,” the Martinez family said in a statement. “Wendy Katrina Martinez was the light of our lives.”

The former Student Council President graduated from Lake Worth High School in 2001.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters the fatal stabbing was likely a random attack and that an investigation is ongoing.

Martinez was stabbed multiple times Tuesday night and surveillance video showed her stumbling into a nearby restaurant for help.

Witnesses called 911 and Martinez was taken to a hospital where she died of her injuries, Newsham said.

The security surveillance video also showed a possible suspect running from the scene. Police said they have recovered a knife that is believed to be the murder weapon.

Investigators said they were looking for a man wearing a long-sleeved, mustard-colored shirt coming down to his thighs and dark-colored sweatpants.

They have not identified the suspect in custody. A court appearance was scheduled Thursday afternoon, the report said.

Newsham and Mayor Muriel Bowser are expected to provide details of the arrest at a news conference.

Technology company FiscalNote, Inc., tweeted that Martinez was recently hired as the company’s chief of staff following her graduation from Georgetown University.

“Wendy was an invaluable member of our team and vibrant member of the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family and friends,” a company statement said.
